Final Fantasy XI is the first Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) of Final Fantasy game series. It was released in Japan for Sony PlayStation 2 on May 16, 2002 and released for Microsoft Windows based personal computers on November 5, the same year. On October 29, 2003, Final Fantasy XI was released to North America on a personal computer together with its first expansion Rise of the Zilart, which then released for PlayStation 2 on March 23, 2004 and now also present for Xbox 360. Final Fantasy XI is the first cross platform MMORPG, in which both PC and console versions connect to the same server, and is one of the first multinational MMORPG, in which all players play in a the same virtual world.

The expansion of both these games, Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia, released on September 16, 2004, and a complete package of this game and two expansions was released in Europe. Five days later, on 21 September 2004, this expansion was released in North America. In addition, full game versions for the U.S. and its two expansions was released in a DVD entitled "The Vana'diel Collection" on August 16, 2005.

The third expansion, Treasures of AHT Urhgan, was released on 18 April 2006. The game was also released for the Xbox 360 on the same day and bundled with the third expansion of existing ones.
